Shaped by the local punk scene which spawned such acts as Against Me!, Hot Water Music and Less Than Jake; frontman Mike Llerena began contextualizing his influences, mixing classic rock with punk and folk with acts like The Gaslight Anthem and Frank Turner serving as constant reference points in his songwriting. “As a singer-songwriter, I would say my music draws as much from Green Day as it does from Bruce Springsteen,” Llerena asserts.
His no-nonsense approach to music began as a teen when he started singing and playing guitar along to his favorite songs. This gave him the confidence to start writing lyrics and eventually picking up other instruments. He started playing live around Gainesville in 2011 and released his debut EP Gold Gone Black in 2014. His second EP Letter of Resignation, released in 2015, landed him an opening for Anthony Raneri (Bayside) and a slot at The Fest (Gainesville’s annual punk rock festival). Llerena released his third solo EP Absence & The Heart in 2017.
In June 2017, Llerena assembled a full band ("Mike Llerena & The Nerve") consisting of Scott Marshall on drums and Brian Jones on bass/backing vocals. The trio played Gainesville's annual Changeville music festival the following spring. The band released their debut LP "Old Haunts & New Horizons" on June 15, 2018 and are currently on a fall tour of Florida and Georgia in support of the release.
The band's music has been featured on 100.5 The Buzz (Gainesville’s New Alternative radio station) and WGOT LP 100.1 FM (Gainesville radio station), as well as in publications like New Noise Magazine, Mind Equals Blown, Imperfect Fifth, Rock Your Lyrics, Blurred Culture, Infectious Magazine and The Defense.
In 2014, KASSON had written and recorded their first single "Gold" which topped the Orlando Best of the City Playlist on Spotify with more than 70,000 streams. Shortly after, they began writing and recording their first EP Infinity with Producer Gustavo Porras at Red Lion Audio which is now streaming and available for sale on all major outlets. The band has performed with major artists all over their home state of Florida including X107.3 & aXis Magazine’s Big O Festival in Orlando; featuring Fall Out Boy, Weezer, Young the Giant, Dirty Heads, New Politics and more. They opened for AWOLNATION at SunFest Music Festival in West Palm Beach, FL and has performed as headliners at the Florida Music Festival from 2015-2017.
Currently, the band is in the studio working on new music and has plans to continue on into their next album which is written and ready to record.
